About CAN-8 VirtuaLab

The CAN-8 VirtuaLab is a cloud-based language learning solution specializing in oral production for any world language via the delivery of dynamic teacher-led curriculum.

The CAN-8 VirtuaLab is a cloud-based language learning solution specializing in oral production for any world language via the delivery of dynamic teacher-led curriculum.

A Personalized Study Program

Each student, school-age or adult, has different individual academic needs and challenges that standardized curriculum does not address. The CAN-8 VirtuaLab allows teachers to easily customize the curriculum to target these needs and focus on specific challenges such as pronunciation, comprehension, intonation, rhythm patterns, expressions and dialects.

An Adaptable Pace

The software is designed to provide students with the closest experience possible to a language immersion course through exercises that simulate conversations and group discussions. Each student is given the opportunity to express themselves individually and practice their new language at their own pace - as often as they want and for as long as they need to achieve proficiency.

Reduced Workloads

With teachers' workloads in mind, CAN-8 is designed to simplify the evaluation of student work. Answers are loaded automatically, organized in an easy-to-read colour-coded table and available to the instructor instantly as the student progresses through their work, thus saving valuable time.

A Versatile Tool

Teachers can engage with their students, participate in group discussions and give oral feedback providing valuable assistance and encouragement to each student on their individual continuum of learning.
Much more than just a practice tool, the CAN-8 VirtuaLab allows for the creation of placement tests, quizzes and evaluations.

Enhanced Security

Sites with curriculum materials that must be kept confidential, such as government departments or corporate offices, may easily implement a private in-house cloud server. This ensures the highest level of security for training materials, as they are not accessible outside the internal network.
Multiple levels of protection exist within CAN-8 to ensure that users' names, responses and marks are only available to authorized personnel as specified by the system administrator.
The design of CAN-8 also limits the ability of users to copy material from the lessons, keeping your curriculum securely stored on the server and preventing students from sharing it with their peers.

A Cost Saving Solution

A Cost Saving Solution

Institutions can easily share the CAN-8 platform among several departments and campuses and use it for multiple languages.
CAN-8 sites can sell or trade their developed material with other CAN-8 clients to maximize returns on investment.
Network based licenses allow cost-effective sharing of resources with no per-student or per-station restrictions on utilization.

Language preservation

Currently CAN-8 is being used by several First Nation groups to preserve and teach Cree, Ojibwe, Mohawk, Cayuga, Interior Salish, Mi'kmaq, and other languages and dialects. CAN-8 is the perfect solution to preserve oral traditions threatened with extinction due to a declining population of native speakers. At the same time, it can be used to teach languages where there is little or no existing teaching material. Non-Roman and syllabic characters are fully supported with customizable virtual keyboards to facilitate typing text in these less common languages.

Our clients say:

Akwesasne Economic Development Agency (AEDA) - Cornwall, Ontario, Canada
Since 2005, AEDA has been developing courseware using the CAN-8 VirtuaLab program. This wonderful tool is used to assist with language acquisition and language maintenance. It can also be very helpful in providing additional support to learners in the classroom.

Multiple languages can be input simultaneously on similar subject matters. This is very important for Haudenosaunee language learners because a learner can see and hear the modifications that occur from Mohawk, to Oneida, to Onondaga, to Cayuga and to Seneca.
AEDA's CAN-8 based curriculum includes stories, songs, speeches, our history and culture, and any other content imaginable. This is an excellent source of knowledge.
In Akwesasne, the program is being used in the local schools, government offices both on the Canadian and U.S side, in the library and in the comfort of people's homes.
The CAN-8 VirtuaLab is a great way to preserve our language and culture for future generations and it is an economicly-viable solution to preserve, protect, and revitalize First Nation's Languages.
... Karen Mitchell - Executive Director

University College of the North (UCN) - Thompson, Manitoba, Canada

The University College of the North (UCN) in northern Manitoba uses CAN8 to deliver university-level Cree language courses to campuses in Thompson, The Pas and Regional Centres throughout northern Manitoba. Students enrol in the course from their local community and the instructor can teach and monitor from any location. UCN is an institution devoted to community and northern development and reflects the Aboriginal reality and cultural diversity of the regions.

Kawenni:io/Gaweni:yo Private School - Six Nations, Ontario, Canada
"In our community we use the CAN-8 VirtuaLab as a new tool in our endeavour to preserve our heritage languages. Our elder speakers are passing on and our language and cultural resources pass with them.
In the language lab, the students engage with their teachers and this has been a great aide to the language instructors and the students' learning. As well, teachers use the CAN-8 lab to assign homework. The students then use the lab from home. Parents and/or community members can engage in, and benefit from, language learning along with the students, after hours from their homes.
Currently, we are creating audio, video and text-based curriculum materials in CAN-8 in order to enhance the cultural component of the lab experience, for both school and home."

About our Licenses

CAN-8 is sold with a license that allows a specific concurrent number of connections to the cloud. This number depends on the needs of the site. These connections are not limited to specific workstations, to geographical location, or to individual users. CAN-8 can be installed on any number of workstations, can be installed for remote access (home users) or for in-lab use and you can register up to 65000 users within CAN-8.

When a user starts CAN-8, the software first checks to see if a license is available to use. If yes, a license is removed from the pool of licenses and assigned to that user. When the user exits the application, or the license is idle for a period, the license goes back into the pool, becoming available to other users.

This Licensing method offer several advantages:

  • Cost-effective. The initial cost of the license is divided by the number of students and the number of years the system is being used, thus quickly becoming a much more affordable solution than individual or per-station licensing.
  • Complete licensing control: The licensing distribution is customizable by the client. Organizations can choose whether students can access the licenses online or in specific classrooms or labs. Use of licenses can also be scheduled for certain periods of time and within certain labs. Once on-line users are deleted from the software, they no longer have access to your licenses.
